358 Races This Week
Well we are in for a full week this week. The 358 sprints have 3 races on their schedule this week. All of which are point races for the Central PA 358 Point Series.
This Friday night Williams Grove and Trail Way Speedways will host the popular division.
On Saturday night Selinsgrove Speedway will host the 6th annual Joe Whitcomb Memorial. This race was rained out on June 20th, so they rescheduled it for this coming Saturday night. I hope to see some 358 teams from Lincoln make the trek up and run this great race that is held in remembrance of a great driver and human being that was Joe Whitcomb.

Sixth Annual Joe Whitcomb Memorial
Selinsgrove Speedway officials rescheduled the Sixth Annual Joe Whitcomb Memorial for 358 sprint cars for this Saturday, Aug. 29, at 7:30 p.m. The 25-lap tribute race, which was rained out on June 20, will honor the memory of the late open wheel racer from Millersburg who succumbed to injuries sustained in a sprint car racing accident at the track on June 21, 2003.
The format for the Whitcomb Memorial will include time trials, heat races, and a B-main to determine the starting lineup for the $1,771-to-win main event. Qualifying will begin at 7:30 p.m. Track gates will open at 5 p.m.
Joining the 358 sprint cars will be the late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners in a four division racing program sponsored by Expert Settlement Services (ESS) of Selinsgrove. ESS offers a full array of real estate settlement services, assisting buyers, sellers, and owners who are refinancing with cost effective settlement services.
Previous winners of the Whitcomb Memorial include Nate Snyder of Halifax (2004); Kevin Nagy of East Brunswick, NJ (2005); and three-time defending winner Blane Heimbach of Selinsgrove.
Snyder took over the point lead after last Saturday’s main event in the chase for the A&A Auto Stores 358 sprint car track championship. He holds a 35-point advantage over Heimbach entering this weekend’s special event, which is one of three point races remaining in the 2009 season.
Whitcomb, who was a dedicated racer most of his life, began his career in go karts at the age of seven. He won hundreds of races in karting and was a three-time national karting champion. A highlight during his karting career was an appearance on ESPN.
Whitcomb became a regular competitor in 358 sprint car racing at Selinsgrove Speedway in 2001 driving his trademark blue and yellow No. 71 racer. That year Whitcomb was named Selinsgrove Speedway’s Sportsman of the Year.
He won his first sprint car race at Selinsgrove on June 8, 2002, ending the five-race win streak of champion Chad Layton. Whitcomb followed up that victory with another one on June 22, 2002 at Selinsgrove. He also won sprint car races at Williams Grove and Bridgeport Speedways during his career.

Pat Cannon of Etters matched his 2008 win total at Selinsgrove Speedway with his sixth win of the 2009 season in Saturday night’s 25-lap 358 sprint car feature. The $1,500 victory marked Cannon’s 16th career at the track behind the wheel of the Highlands’ Tire Service No. 3.
Nate Snyder of Halifax, following his fourth-place finish, has taken the point lead from Blane Heimbach of Selinsgrove in the A&A Auto Stores 358 sprint car standings. Heimbach was sidelined with motor troubles in Saturday night’s main event.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present the Joe Whitcomb Memorial for 358 sprint cars plus a complete program of late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, sponsored by Expert Settlement Services. Track gates will open at 5 p.m.
The Whitcomb Memorial, which was rained out on June 20, will pay $1,771 to win and $225 to start the 25-lap A-main. Time trials, heat races, and a B-main will be the format for qualifying.
Second-place starter Ryan Kissinger raced into the lead at the start of the sprint car feature. Kissinger was chased by polesitter Josh Beard, while fifth-place starter Colby Womer and ninth-place starter Davie Franek battled for the third position.
At the end of the fifth lap, Kissinger and Beard began to pull away from the field, while Womer, Franek, and fourth-place starter Chuck Paige raced in the top five. On the eighth circuit, 12th-place starter Pat Cannon moved by Paige for fifth and at the halfway point advanced to fourth in traffic.
The race’s first stoppage was on lap 16, when Shannon Mausteller flipped in his No. 21 in turns one and two. Mausteller escaped injury in the crash. On the lap 17 restart, Cannon drove by Womer for third in the second turn, then passed Beard for second in the fourth turn.
On the 18th circuit, Cannon made the winning pass by Kissinger racing off of the second turn. On the 23rd lap, the caution flag unfurled for Blane Heimbach, who stopped his sprint car on the backstretch with a reported blown engine.
The sprint to the finish saw Cannon pull away and 15th-place starter Nate Snyder advance to the fourth spot after a battle with Womer. For the finish, Cannon was victorious by 1.8 seconds over Kissinger, Beard, Snyder, and Womer.
