Hanover, PA (08/06/10) – Brad McClelland will be the man to beat in Saturday’s “World Energy Systems World Championship for 358 Sprint Cars” at Lincoln Speedway after claiming his second win in-a-row and fifth of the year in the 358 sprint car feature at Trail-Way Speedway Friday night.
“We started up front, and it was the luck of the draw,” said McClelland after exiting his B&D Truck Hoist #6 in victory lane, “But this Jim Travis motor goes!”
The win was his division-leading 25th career v-ctory in the 358s. Counting his micro-sprint division leading 74 wins, the victory was the 99th of his Trail-Way career.
A redraw by the top four drivers in each of the qualifiers put McClelland beside Brook Weibley on the outside of the front row. McClelland took the lead at the drop of the green and led every lap.
McClelland announced that he’ll stay in the 358 sprinter for Saturday’s world championship event at Lincoln .
“It’ll be our first time out in a 358 at Lincoln this year,” explained McClelland, “And it’ll be a challenge because there’ll be a lot of cars.”
McClelland has been running at 410 sprint car in the Pigeon Hills this year, and is a leading candidate for that division’s rookie of-the-year there.
Weibley ran second the entire way, with Joe Trone, Jr. starting third and staying there the entire way.
But after that, there was lots of action. Jeff Rohrbaugh, piloting the Berwager #4U, started eighth and finished fourth. And Kyle Moody came from 20th starting spot to finish fifth.
Sixth through tenth were Steve Owings, 15th-starting Tim Wagaman, Randy Davis, Jr., Mike Bittinger, and 17th-starting Ted Thomas.
The race was marred by a three-car crash on the frontstretch that resulted in an injury to former 2010 winner Brian Bruckner. None of the three cars flipped, but Bruckner spun into the infield and was taken to Hanover Hospital for a check-up after complaining of a back injury and difficulty breathing. Bruckner was placed into the ambulance on a backboard, and was still being treated at press time.
The event was night number one in the Trail-Way/Lincoln “Shootout,” awarding bonus money to the top ten drivers in combined two-night finishes at the two tracks. Sponsoring the $2,000 “Shootout” are Pancho’s Racing Products, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, Travis Racing Engines, and Insinger Performance.
Heats for the 27 sprint cars were won by Rohrbaugh, Owings, and McClelland. The consolation event was won by Zach EuculanFeature (25 Laps)
