SHAFFER WINS LINCOLN'S WORLD ENERGY SYSTEMS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 8/7/10 - There were only two caution flags in Saturday's World Energy Systems World Championship for 358 Sprint Cars. But the second and final one had everything to do with the outcome of the race. And in the end, it was Hallam's Adrian Shaffer taking advantage of Dale Hammaker's horrible luck and pulling into victory lane to accept the $5,500 top prize. The night didn't start well for Shaffer, who missed his turn in time trials and was forced to start seventh in his qualifying event. He advanced to a qualifying spot in his heat, and by virtue of his fastest time in his heat group, was one of the ten drivers to redraw for starting spots at the front of the World Championship field. Shaffer drew a #5 pill for the start, and actually went backwards in the early going, scored sixth as late as lap 13. He moved back into the top
five by passing Brad McClelland on lap 14.
And that's about the time that things started getting crazy. Lincoln points leader and polesitter Dale Hammaker dominated the early stages of the race until hitting lapped traffic at the same time Shaffer was moving into fifth. Fourth-starting Jeff Rohrbaugh, driving Mike Bittinger's #12, moved past front row starter Nate Snyder on lap five and began closing on Hammaker when the leader reached the lapped traffic. Hammaker's 3.44-second lead on lap nine dwindled to .53 seconds on lap 15. For the next five laps, Hammaker and Rohrbaugh raced side-by-side behind lapped traffic.
That's when disaster struck for Hammaker, whose steering wheel fell off. The veteran driver known as "the Godfather" of the 358 sprints controlled his spin on the backstretch, but handed the lead to Rohrbaugh. It was the second time in two years (including last year at Trail-Way) that Hammaker lost a steering wheel while leading. Hammaker put the steering wheel back on the car and rejoined the field. We was 20th at the finish. But Rohrbaugh's luck wasn't much better. Although was the new leader, he had a right rear tire going flat, and could only keep the leadfor two laps.
Shaffer dove under Rohrbaugh in the first and second turns of lap 22 and took off like he was shot out of a cannon to grab the race lead. Over the final laps, Shaffer continued to pull away and took the checkered by a huge 5.36-seconds over Selinsgrove invader Nate Snyder. "It's a shame what happened to Dale, and then Rohrbaugh was going to check out," said a jubilant Shaffer upon exiting the Jeff Boll and Mike Miller #91 sprinter, "And then all of sudden it looked like he had a right rear flat. I said to myself 'McClelland is pointing...Nate's pointing...it's like, we better get rolling here."
"As soon as we took the green (lap 20), Brad was making his move, and I put the pressure on Nate as hard as I could, because it was time to go," added Shaffer, "I knew Jeff was going to run it for all it was worth and I needed to get by him before I got into trouble and somebody else got around." Shaffer joked that reason he missed his time trial order was because the team was playing bingo in the transporter. McClelland, who raced back and forth with Aaron Ott over the five laps, reclaimed third on lap 27 and won the Trail-Way/Lincoln "Shootout" and the $500 bonus that went with it. Ott settled for fourth with Scott Geesey completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Chad Criswell, 22nd-starting Logan Schuchart (who picked up $400 in hard charger bonuses from Livingston's Lawn Care and the Gear Shop in Baltimore, MD), Ted Thomas, Jr., John Barnett, and Billy Johns. Heats for the "358" Sprints were won by Glenndon Forsythe, Dale Hammaker, Barnett, Rohrbaugh, and McClelland. Tim Berkheimer won the C-Main and Mike Bittinger won the B-Main in a new 12-lap track record time of 3:25.89. Billy Dietrich set a new one lap track record for the 358 Sprints in time trials against the 51-car field with a one-lap time of 14.283-seconds (94.518 MPH) The old record, 14.309-seconds was set by his father Dan Dietrich on 9/6/2003.

MATT HEIMBACH HOLDS OFF COUSIN BLANE HEIMBACH FOR FIRST SELINSGROVE SPRINT WIN
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The victory in Saturday night’s 25-lap 358 sprint car feature at Selinsgrove Speedway came down to a final-lap duel between cousins Matt Heimbach and Blane Heimbach of Selinsgrove. Following a side-by-side race through turns three and four, it was Matt who took his first career checkered flag at Selinsgrove by just a half of a second over Blane. M. Heimbach became the division’s eighth different feature winner this season. He joins Colby Womer of Mt. Pleasant Mills as the second 358 sprint car driver to earn a career-first victory at the track in 2010.Selinsgrove Speedway will present a four division racing program at 7:30p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, featuring the 358 sprint cars, late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners sponsored by Foss Jewelers of Selinsgrove. The 358 sprint cars will also run the feature that was rained out on July 24.
On Saturday, Aug. 21, the speedway will host an open wheel doubleheader featuring the URC sprint cars and 358 sprint cars. Also on the Aug. 21 program will be the late models.
Second-place starter Matt Heimbach powered into the lead at the start of the sprint car feature. M. Heimbach was chased by polesitter Cody Keller and fifth-place starter Phil Walter. On the second lap, 12th-place starter Pat Cannon stopped on the track with a flat tire and then rejoined the field, only to withdraw from the race with another flat tire on lap six.
Following spirited battles for both the second and third positions with Keller and fourth-place starter Nyle Berkes, Walter’s car lost power on the backstretch due to engine woes on the 11th lap. When the race resumed, M. Heimbach continued to set the pace in front of Keller, Berkes, and 10th-place starter Blane Heimbach.
On the 15th circuit, B. Heimbach advanced to second and began to reel in M. Heimbach for the lead as Franek then made it a three-car battle at the front of the pack. On the final circuit in lapped traffic, B. Heimbach edged out M. Heimbach for the lead racing out of turn two. Entering turns three and four, the Heimbach cousins raced side by side, with M. Heimbach using the inside lane.
Racing off turn four, M. Heimbach pulled into the lead and posted a half of a second margin of victory over B. Heimbach, Franek, Berkes, and 11th-place starter Derek Locke.

McCLELLAND WINS OPENING NIGHT OF TRAIL-WAY/LINCOLN “SHOOTOUT”

Hanover, PA (08/06/10) – Brad McClelland will be the man to beat in Saturday’s “World Energy Systems World Championship for 358 Sprint Cars” at Lincoln Speedway after claiming his second win in-a-row and fifth of the year in the 358 sprint car feature at Trail-Way Speedway Friday night.
“We started up front, and it was the luck of the draw,” said McClelland after exiting his B&D Truck Hoist #6 in victory lane, “But this Jim Travis motor goes!”
The win was his division-leading 25th career v-ctory in the 358s. Counting his micro-sprint division leading 74 wins, the victory was the 99th of his Trail-Way career.
A redraw by the top four drivers in each of the qualifiers put McClelland beside Brook Weibley on the outside of the front row. McClelland took the lead at the drop of the green and led every lap.
McClelland announced that he’ll stay in the 358 sprinter for Saturday’s world championship event at Lincoln .
“It’ll be our first time out in a 358 at Lincoln this year,” explained McClelland, “And it’ll be a challenge because there’ll be a lot of cars.”
McClelland has been running at 410 sprint car in the Pigeon Hills this year, and is a leading candidate for that division’s rookie of-the-year there.
Weibley ran second the entire way, with Joe Trone, Jr. starting third and staying there the entire way.
But after that, there was lots of action. Jeff Rohrbaugh, piloting the Berwager #4U, started eighth and finished fourth. And Kyle Moody came from 20th starting spot to finish fifth.
Sixth through tenth were Steve Owings, 15th-starting Tim Wagaman, Randy Davis, Jr., Mike Bittinger, and 17th-starting Ted Thomas.
The race was marred by a three-car crash on the frontstretch that resulted in an injury to former 2010 winner Brian Bruckner. None of the three cars flipped, but Bruckner spun into the infield and was taken to Hanover Hospital for a check-up after complaining of a back injury and difficulty breathing. Bruckner was placed into the ambulance on a backboard, and was still being treated at press time.
The event was night number one in the Trail-Way/Lincoln “Shootout,” awarding bonus money to the top ten drivers in combined two-night finishes at the two tracks. Sponsoring the $2,000 “Shootout” are Pancho’s Racing Products, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, Travis Racing Engines, and Insinger Performance.
Heats for the 27 sprint cars were won by Rohrbaugh, Owings, and McClelland. The consolation event was won by Zach EuculanFeature (25 Laps)
