DIETRICH CLAIMS FIRST OF YEAR IN TRAIL-WAY 358 SPRINTS

POINTS BATTLE GOES DOWN TO FINAL RACE OF YEAR NEXT FRIDAY

Hanover, PA (09/10/10) – There’s no lack of excitement when Billy Dietrich is in the field.

And he kept it exciting all 25 laps on Friday night, starting on the pole, running second to outside front row starter Doug Hammaker, taking the lead around the outside in turns three and four of lap four, and holding off a charging Brad McClelland over the second over the final 18 laps to score his first win of the year at Trail-Way Speedway.

“I hit the wall a lot, but that’s what they’re there for,” said a jubilant Dietrich upon exiting his Racer’s Used Parts Warehouse/William Shellhamer Hay & Straw #88, “Brad gave me a little love tap before that last restart, and I just love kicking his butt!”

McClelland and Dietrich are good friends, but actually, McClelland pulled up lame on the final half-lap. He was credited with a 14th-place finish, setting up a dramatic final points race of the season in next Friday’s Trone Outdoor Advertising Championship event.

Doug Hammaker reclaimed second on the final lap, with 11th-starting Tim Wagaman crossing third. Wagaman’s third-place finish combined with McClelland’s DNF pulled Wagaman to within 14 points (756-742) of McClelland entering next week’s championship.

“Doug did just what I didn’t want him to do,” added Dietrich, “and we finally found a groove and came back. It feels good to win, and racing here is exciting as hell from my seat.”

Arron Spahr, who started 13th in just his third Trail-Way 358 sprint race, finished fourth.

Steve Owings, who pulled into the pits after his throttle stuck and his spun into the infield lining up for his heat, came from 20th and last starting spot to cross fifth.

Sixth through tenth were Randy Whisler, Scott Fisher, Dale Hammaker, Joe Trone, Jr., and Mike Bittinger.

Heats for the 21 “358” sprinters were won by Dietrich, Doug Hammaker, and Wagaman.

Heimbach Wins Williams Grove Speedway 358 Feature.

Automobile racing is a sport of inches. Friday night, at Williams Grove Speedway, a few inches decided the outcome of the Tool Shed of America 358 Sprint Car 20-lap main. In a feature race with more twists and turns than a dollar store detective novel, Heimbach used a contact-made pass in the final laps to capture the victory.

Jay Reichart sprinted into the lead with Chris Shuttlesworth following. Reichart pulled away from the field. Any hopes for an upset victory by Reichart were lost during a lap four caution. During the yellow flag period, Reichart went to the pits with a flat right rear tire.

Following the restart, Chad Trout shot into the lead with Eric Tomecek and Shuttlesworth in pursuit. Blane Heimbach, the eighth place starter, took over fourth. Two laps later Heimbach captured third.

The lead trio drove away from the field. On the 14th lap Heimbach passed Tomecek for second. Moments later the right side headers fell off the lead car of Trout. Over the next several passes of the Williams Grove half-mile, Heimbach tried to slide his No. 12 in front of Trout’s No. 7c.

The outcome of the race was determined with two laps remaining. Heimbach slid up the track in turn four. There was contact with the Trout machine. Trout’s car hit the fence and began to flip. The Pat Cannon-driven No. 3 crashed into Trout’s car. Neither Trout nor Cannon were injured but both cars were eliminated from the race.

Heimbach lead the final two laps to win in front of Cory Haas, Scott Geesey, Kevin Nouse and Glenndon Forsythe.

“He was really good on the top all night long. I think I was better on the long run. I thought I had him cleared but apparently, I didn’t. I run into him but that is racing. I apologize to Chad but I did it and there is nothing I can say right now,” Heimbach said.

Geesey, Ted Thomas and Reichart won the qualifying races for the 29-car field. Danny Massey took the consolation.

Cannon wins again in Billy Kimmel Memorial

Eighth starter Logan Schuchart of Hanover rocketed to the front when the green flag fell in the 20-lap feature for the 358 sprints, already up to second behind leader Eric Tomecek on just the second circuit.

Schuchart drove by Tomecek on a lap three restart and immediately began running away from the field.

Point leader Pat Cannon, who started 12th, worked himself up to second at the halfway point but was having little luck running down Schuchart’s sizable advantage when the caution flag unfurled with just four laps to go.

The return to action saw Schuchart bobble while running the high groove in the second corner with a pair of laps to go and that was all it took for Cannon to pounce and drive to the win.

Schuchart earned second followed by Tomecek, TJ Stutts and Glenndon Forsythe. Cory Haas, Blane Heimbach, Scott Geesey, Matt Boland and Adrian Shaffer completed the top 10.

Twin qualifiers went to Tomecek and Stutts.

Daryn Pittman Declared Winner Of National Open

Cannon Comes Up Light At Scales Giving Pittman His 3rd Win Of 2010 At Selinsgrove

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Daryn Pittman of Owasso, Okl., was awarded the win in the 10th Annual NRG Controls North National Open for 358-360 sprint cars Saturday night at Selinsgrove Speedway when the car driven by Pat Cannon of Etters, who took the checkered flag, was disqualified for being about five pounds under the minimum weight requirement of 1,475 pounds.

The $8,000 win in the 35-lap Open was the third of the season for Pittman at Selinsgrove at the wheel of the Lelands.com No.27, having also won both of the track’s 410 sprint car races in May and July. Pittman is a pre-race favorite going into the Jim Nace Memorial National Open for 410 sprint cars at the track on Sept. 18.

The record purse of nearly $36,500 drew a record field of 48 entries (20 360s and 28 358s) for the race. Jason Shultz of Carlisle, who was racing with a 358 motor, set fast time with a lap of 17.800 seconds for the Fast Tees Fast Time Award in Memory of Jim Nace $100 bonus. Logan Schuhart of Hanover won the C-main, while Kevin Nouse of Lewisberry won the Mach I Chassis B-main.

TJ Stutts of Liverpool, who led the first 10 laps of the A-main, earned a $500 bonus from Mach I Chasis for being the highest finishing driver in a 358 sprint car (7th), while Colby Womer of Mt. Pleasant Mills, who started 25th and finished 12th, received the $200 Sprint Ace hard charger bonus.

Jason Schmidt of Port Royal won his second feature of the season in the 15-lap pro stock race.

Selinsgrove Speedway will present a program of 358 sprint cars, late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. Track gates will open at 5 p.m.

Polesitter TJ Stutts stormed into the lead at the start of the 358-360 sprint car Open. On the first lap, fourth-place starter Phil Walter passed second-place starter Jason Shultz for the runner-up position. The caution flag unfurled on lap two for debris on the speedway.

When the race resumed, Stutts and P. Walter see-sawed for the lead, while seventh-place starter Pat Cannon advanced to third and on lap five passed P. Walter for second. Another caution flag for debris on lap 10 regrouped the field as third-place starter Stevie Smith, who was racing fifth at the time, withdrew with mechanical problems on his race car.

On the restart, Stutts and Cannon exchanged passes for the lead. Racing out of the turn four to complete the 11th lap, Cannon took the lead, while Stutts, 11th-place starter Davie Franek, fifth-place starter Daryn Pittman, and P. Walter raced in the top five.

By lap 17, the leaders began to encounter slower traffic, allowing Pittman to move into second and set his sites on Cannon. On lap 24, the caution came out when P. Walter’s car did a 360-degree spin and kept moving, only to hit the wall and stop on lap 25.

On the 27th circuit, after exchanging the lead through turns one and two, Pittman took the front spot with an inside pass racing out of turn four. With five laps remaining, Pittman was leading Cannon, Franek, 13th-place starter Aaron Ott, and 15th-place starter Blane Heimbach.

With four laps remaining, the red flag stopped the race when Shultz’ car flipped hard in turn three. Shultz escaped injury. On the final restart, Cannon remained in striking distance, then reclaimed the lead using the outside lane racing off turn four on lap 33.

At the finish, Cannon took the checkered flag by one second ahead of Pittman, only to have Pittman declared the winner of the race after Cannon’s race car came up lite by about five pounds in the post-race inspection.

Franek was credited with second, followed by Ott, Heimbach, and Mike Walter.
