OWINGS, DIETRICH CLAIM TRAIL-WAY358 SPRINT CAR WINS

Hanover, PA (06/03/10) – It was chapter two of Billy Dietrich’s sprint car clinic at Trail-Way Speedway Friday night.

The former Trail-Way champ drove around both Kyle Moody and leader Tim Wagaman over the final laps to score his second win of the year and 16th of his career in the 25-lap feature.

His win, combined with a sixth-place finish earlier in the evening in the make-up feature from last week’s rainout, vaulted him into the Trail-Way points lead.

“We were out to lunch earlier,” said Dietrich after exiting his Racer’s Used Parts Warehouse #8 in victory lane, “And then a buddy came over and gave me some pointers.”

“I could get used to this,” he added, “There was good racing all through the field and they did a good job turning the track around during intermission.”

Dietrich started ninth and advanced to the top five by lap five. He was running third when the final caution of the race came out for a spinning Joe Trone, Jr. exiting turn four of lap 13. He drove around Kyle Moody for the runner-up spot in lapped traffic on lap 20, and then drove around race leader Tim Wagaman through turns three and four of lap 22.

Wagaman settled for second, with Moody third, Logan Schuchart fourth, and Jeff Rohrbaugh fifth. Sixth through tenth were Steve Owings, Dale Hammaker, JB Cunningham, Ted Thomas, and Mike Duncan, Jr.

Earlier in the evening, Steve Owings claimed his second win of the year in the 25-lap make-up feature postponed by rain last week.

Owings started eighth, advanced to second by the end of the fourth lap, and caught Zach Euculano for the lead on lap seven.

“It feels good to get this one in the bag,” said Owings, “If Brad (McClelland) had his suit with him, I would have been watching from the stands.”

Crossing second behind the Valentine Motorsports/Westminster Transmissions #35 was Dale Hammaker, with Joe Trone, Jeff Rohrbaugh, and Logan Schuchart completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Dietrich, Cunningham, Moody, 20th-starting Wagaman, and Duncan.

Heats for the 25 sprinters were won by Owings, Wagaman, and Rohrbaugh.

CANNON WINS SPRINT CAR THRILLER OVER SCHUCHART

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – In the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Central PA 358 Sprint Car Series, defending champion Pat Cannon of Etters dueled with current series point leader Logan Schuchart of Hanover before making a late-race pass for the victory in Saturday night’s suspenseful 25-lap main event at Selinsgrove Speedway.

The victory marked Cannon’s third of the season and 30th of his career at Selinsgrove behind the wheel of the Highlands’ Tire & Service Center No. 3. Blane Heimbach of Selinsgrove, who was sidelined in both his heat and the feature in separate crashes, continues to lead the track point standings entering next weekend’s race.

The speedway will host another four division show of 358 sprint cars, late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 4, sponsored by Selinsgrove Ford. Dealership owner Todd Benner posted a $200 bonus for the winner of each feature on June 4.

On the initial start of the sprint car feature, polesitter Ryan Kissinger took the early lead only to fall off the pace entering turn three. For the restart, outside front row starter Michael Ruttkamp pulled into the lead while fourth-place starter Kevin Nouse followed in close pursuit.

By lap five, sixth-place starter Eric Tomecek and 10th-place starter Logan Schuchart were dueling for the third position as 12th-place starter Pat Cannon advanced to fifth. A six-car melee in turns three and four stopped the race on lap six when Jason Shultz’s car flipped over. Also involved in the incident were Derek Locke, TJ Stutts, Brian Nornhold, Matt Horst, and point leader Blane Heimbach. All drivers escaped injury and Locke, Horst, and Stutts were able to rejoin the race.

On the 11th circuit, Schuchart passed Nouse for second and set his sites on Ruttkamp. A lap later, Cannon powered into third. By lap 18, an all-out war on wheels unfolded for the lead between Ruttkamp, Schuchart, and Cannon. Schuchart eventually took the lead with an inside pass off turn four on the 20th circuit, then was pressured by Cannon until the white-flag lap when Cannon made the winning pass using the inside lane entering turn one. Cannon took the checkered flag by one second over Schuchart, Stutts, Ruttkamp, and Tomecek.
